Detail of the North side of Mt. Tabor Park (North is to the left), Mt. Tabor Park is one of the larger and more complex parks in which we've performed. Hopefully these instructions can help you navigate the way. The map above is based on the Portland Parks and Recreation Map. Here's a direct link to the large original that shows the whole park. We will have signs posted to help guide you, but not at every intersection. The dotted lines on the map are trails and any numbers you see are the mileage between points. When in doubt, head up hill. The goal is to get to the red "X" at the summit of the park located in Harvey Scott Circle. We will NOT be at the amphitheater area (lower left corner), but that is probably one of the best places to park and walk to the summit. The closest point to the summit to which you can actually drive is the red "P", which is a small parking area. There are two barricades to the upper roads (also drawn in red). Bike, walkers and wheel chairs can get past the barricades, but a vehicle may not unless you have a key. More on the trails below. What should I bring? Blanket or Chair: the audience area is seated in the grass, but it has been a little cold and wet. Seating is first come, first serve, however we will reserve an area in the front for those with blankets. It'll fill up quickly, so if you come late we'll try to seat you the best we can, but there's no promises that even a side view will be available. It's recommend you come 30 minutes before the show starts. Mosquito repellant: self explanatory. This park isn't as bad as some, but it is recommended. Flash Light: It will get dark up there by the time the show is done (between 9:30 and 10:00pm) and there are stretches of trail that aren't well-lit. We'll have Coleman lanterns at the performance space and a few will be moved about to help people. However, a personal light is really the best idea. The sign said the park closes at 10:00pm, will I be able to get out? The sign is correct, they will close the lower gates at about 10:00 pm. However: we have a key to let people out. We will be letting out people via the 60th and SE Salmon entrance (yellow route on the above map). We will be doing this through 10:30 pm. What's the closest bus stop? The closest bus stop is located at SE 69th Ave and SE Yamhill served by the #15 bus. From there you can take the "Red" or "Green" route (more below). The next closest is SE 60th and SE Salmon served by the #71. This is more of a hike. Basically you would take the yellow route, but there are trails that cut across the road loops. Entrances: You can get to the upper park from any of the four park entrances, the key is to keep heading uphill. The best and closest entrance is probably from SE 69th and Yamhill (North side, marked in green), which takes you fairly direct to the amphitheater area. The next best is from SE 60th and SE Yamhill (yellow marking). Parking: The closest place to park is the red "P" on the map, however it is a small area and will probably fill quickly. There is roadside parking, but some roadside areas are intermittent in allowing you to park there. Always follow the signs. The next best place is near the Crater Amphitheater, and walking up. What did you mean by "Red Route", etc.? The colors are our own and are only for the purposes of discussing on this page and the attached map (assuming you have access to a color printer). They won't be any color codes at the park. The "Yellow" route just shows the entrance/exit to the SE Salmon & SE 60th Entrance. The "Red" route from SE 69th street (North end of the park) is the most direct to the playing area. It is a staircase right up the side of the hill and will take you within 30 feet of where we are performing. It is mostly stairs, not always with railing. The "Blue" route map assumes you're parking near the amphitheater and walking up. There are occasional stairs and the trail can be steep, but not as steep as the red route. The "Green" route is the least steep way up the hill and has no stairs at any point. It presumes you either walk from the nearest bus stop (#15, SE 69th and SE Belmont) or from the amphitheater. Once it gets to "Reservoir Loop" it gets steeper, so it may make since to travel over to the red parking area and take the long summit drive all the way to the top. It's a 15+ minute walk from the red-parking area around Tabor Summit Drive. Handicap Access: We actually have a key to the barricade for loading/unloading, but we are restricted to only one vehicle in the summit loop at a time and cannot just leave it open. We CAN however ferry individuals who are unable to make it up the slope from the red parking area. We will have a person on standby with a mobile phone (503-467-6573) for just such an instance. A sign will also be posted at the red parking area with the phone number. If you are part of a larger group of people who are in need of such help, please call before hand to make arrangements. |
